  • Baijiu has officially been named Canada’s Best Patio for 2026 🍹 Canada’s 100 Best has praised the downtown hotspot, Baiju, for its massive 230-seat courtyard, year-round heated glass patio, and energetic atmosphere that keeps buzzing long after sunset. The award shines another national spotlight on Edmonton’s growing food and cocktail scene just as patio season kicks into full swing.

  • Black bears are once again being spotted around Elk Island 🐻 Parks Canada says sightings are becoming more common this time of year, reminding visitors to give bears plenty of space, avoid stopping for roadside photos, and stay alert while hiking or cycling. It’s a good sign for local wildlife populations — but also a reminder that we’re sharing the outdoors with some very large neighbours!

  • Edmonton’s free forest bathing program is back 🌿 Here for a second season and starting May 14, the city is offering guided wellness sessions in parks across Edmonton all summer long. • Alberta is opening a new DNA and forensic laboratory in Edmonton 🧬 This is a move that the province says will help speed up criminal investigations and reduce reliance on out-of-province testing. Officials say the facility will process DNA evidence faster, helping police solve cases more efficiently while easing backlogs in the justice system. Expected to become operational over the next few years.

  • Windsor Park is getting a new 25-storey high-rise 🏗️ A major new building is coming to one of Edmonton’s most established neighbourhoods after city council approval. Worth Your Time

Edmonton’s Hidden Food Forest 🌱

Back in 2014, more than 100 volunteers planted thousands of edible native plants into the slopes of MacKinnon Ravine with a surprisingly ambitious goal: creating a self-sustaining food forest in Edmonton’s river valley. Saskatoons, raspberries, hazelnuts, chokecherries, strawberries, and currants were all added as part of a City-supported initiative designed to boost biodiversity while also producing food for both people and wildlife.

More than a decade later, the project still stands as one of Edmonton’s more quietly fascinating environmental experiments — a blend of urban ecology, community building, and edible landscaping hidden right inside the river valley many people pass through every day without realizing it.

You can visit the forest for yourself along the south-facing slopes of MacKinnon Ravine in Edmonton’s west-end river valley trail system, near the MacKinnon Ravine Park area!

Stylus Fine Pens is a little paradise for people who still appreciate the feel of good paper and a beautifully crafted pen. This independently owned Edmonton shop specializes in fountain pens, inks, notebooks, and desk accessories sourced from around the world. Writing a note or a letter suddenly feels like an art form again as soon as you walk in the store.

I visited this past week and picked myself up a new notebook. They had a great selection of envelopes, writing ware, paper, and journals of all types.

Whether you need a new day planner, are looking for a thoughtful gift, or just need a new place to scribble down ideas, Stylus is worth a stop. ✒️📖
