The City has now posted its full 2026 approved budget and highlights, confirming a 6.9% municipal property tax levy increase for 2026. For homeowners and businesses, it is the clearest signal yet of what this year’s city services and capital spending will cost at the local level.
Council also added $23 million for two new fire stations and an emergency communications centre as part of the capital adjustments.
The budget confirms a 3% decrease in 2026 waste utility rates, with monthly rates dropping for both curbside and communal collection.
The approved package also includes $25 million for 25 new buses to expand regular service in three high-growth areas (more on that below).
Edmonton’s extreme weather response was deactivated yesterday on Wednesday, March 4 at 9 a.m. as temperatures improved after the late-February cold snap. Warming trend starts today as we slowly make our way out of winter.

Starting in April, Edmonton Transit Service will increase bus service as ridership continues to climb, adding about 1,000 weekly service hours through spring schedule changes and broader 2025 network growth. Changes include the following:
Route 729 (new) — Converts the Keswick / Glenridding Ravine On Demand zone to weekday conventional bus service, running between Leger and Century Park (weekends remain On Demand in those neighbourhoods).
Route 527 (new, late 2025) — A split off Route 508, creating a separate service linking the Millbourne area to Mill Woods Transit Centre.
Route 926 (new, implemented in 2024) — Replaced On Demand Transit to serve Stillwater, The Uplands, and east Edgemont.
Applications are open for Edmonton’s next Historian Laureate, with the City and heritage partners selecting the 2026–28 term this month. The Historian Laureate works closely with the Edmonton Historical Board and Edmonton Heritage Council to promote Edmonton's rich and diverse history.
The deadline for submission of nominations is this Monday March 9, 2026 at 4pm. Submit your nomination here!
The City of Edmonton has launched the Downtown Action Plan Fund, with up to $3 million in funding available for community-led downtown projects. It is one of the more concrete new policy-and-investment moves affecting the core right now!

Before You Go…
That puts a wrap on this week’s edition of River City Lights. 🙌
Have been making a lot of connections around town this week, stitching things together one conversation at a time.
Would love to know…what’s something that made you feel grateful this week? You can reply to this email, and I’ll write back! Could be anything. I love getting to know our readers.
For me, I was grateful to connect with some young entrepreneurs who are out there trying to make their dreams work. They’re working their day jobs while they burn the midnight oil on something they’re passionate about, full of energy and optimism—some of my favourite qualities in people.
Can’t wait to hear yours.
