Good Morning, Edmonton! 🌇
Dining week is officially underway in the city, with 80+ downtown restaurants taking part. That means great value deals across the downtown core—the perfect time to explore something new, or save on your local favourites. Get out and support our incredibly diverse food scene!
If you’re an art-lover, there’s Arts District Day this Saturday, which is free to attend and featuring a full schedule of interesting exhibits, tours, and locations to wander (or…ponder? 🤔) through. With the weather finally cooperating and hinting at spring, it should be a great weekend for anything you want to plan!
Quick question. The vast majority of readers picked Thursday as their preferred day to receive River City Lights in our poll last week, but there was a sizeable portion who wanted Sunday/Monday so they had more time to plan things to do…
So I’d love to know:
Would you like to receive River City Lights twice per week?
If you have another idea, just reply to this email, and I’ll reply back! I want to make this as valuable as possible for you personally, and Edmonton as a whole.
Enjoy your day! 🙌

Valley Line West construction has locked in a longer-term downtown pinch point; 102 Avenue (103–107 Street) is permanently down to one eastbound lane, with bike lanes shifted to 103 Avenue until the end of 2027. Phase 1 work starts this Monday, March 16th. The city released a video two weeks ago that showcases some of the work that has been done over the past year. I’ve got it for you here.

Meet the Historic Alberta Couple Who Fought for Press Freedom
Fascinating read about an Alberta couple in 1905 who ran a small independent paper and repeatedly ended up in court for what they printed. Libel laws, political power, and competing business interests led them to face adversity of all kinds on the local media landscape. It has left its remnants in the way that independent journalism is being greyed out, even today. Their story still matters, and I hope you take the time to read it.

Patrick Lundeen and Emma Radford in Peggy & Balmer, a documentary that re-enacts the struggle faced to establish independent news media in Alberta by an Ontario couple, Peggy and Balmer Watt, who arrived in Edmonton in 1905. The film was made in 2025 by their grandson, Tom Radford, who also wrote a book the year prior about his grandparents.
