Edmonton Marathon Course Was Too Long 🏃 Edmonton Marathon organizers say this year’s half marathon and marathon courses were 674.7 metres too long. It was a significant error for runners chasing personal bests, Boston Marathon qualifying times, national rankings, or elite performances.

Hope Mission Shelter Plan Raises Questions 🏘️ Hope Mission is proposing a 125-bed homeless shelter in southeast Edmonton near Argyll Road, saying it could help reduce pressure on downtown and Chinatown while meeting growing demand. The plan has also raised concerns from nearby business owners about safety, foot traffic, and the impact on the surrounding area.

TELUS World of Science Reopening Delayed 🔬 Edmonton’s wet summer has pushed the TELUS World of Science reopening to early 2027 after July flooding and subsequent storms caused additional damage. Repairs are now expected to continue into December, and the science centre says it needed to address the risk of further water intrusion before rebuilding could begin.

Parking Tops Edmonton 311 Complaints 🚗 Parking issues made up more than 40% of Edmonton’s top 50 complaints to 311 in 2025, led by 20,570 abandoned-vehicle reports. The city points to limited tow lot space and construction impacts, raising questions about whether planning decisions helped create the backlog.

Push Begins for Women’s Pro Soccer in Edmonton ⚽ Edmonton city councillor Thu Parmar is backing a petition to bring a Northern Super League women’s professional soccer team to the city. Supporters are aiming for 5,000 signatures and say Edmonton’s strong sports culture, recent PWHL crowds, and this week’s CPKC Women’s Open show there is growing momentum for women’s sports here.

🆓 Edmonton International Fringe Festival (Through August 23) 🎭 You don’t have to buy a theatre ticket to enjoy the final days of Fringe in Old Strathcona. The festival grounds include free outdoor performers, the Fringe Music Series in ATB Park, pêhonân Indigenous programming, KidsFringe, patios, buskers, and plenty of people-watching.

🆓 Edmonton Dragon Festival (August 21–23) 🐉 Kinistinâw Park and Chinatown host a free three-day cultural festival featuring the Canadian National and Pan American Lion Dance Championships, cultural performances, family activities, an outdoor movie, and Taste of Chinatown vendors. Festival hours run 9 AM–10 PM Friday and Saturday, and 9 AM–5 PM Sunday.

🆓 United in Movement: Family Wellness Community Event (August 22) 🌍 This is a free day of movement, culture, family fun, and community connection to Louise McKinney Riverfront Park. SocaFit, Indigenous dance and cultural experiences, African drumming and dance, family games, children’s activities, music, storytelling, and more from 10 AM–2 PM. Reserve your free spot here!

🆓 Edmonton PrideFest (August 22) 🌈 Fan Park in ICE District turns into a free, all-ages Pride celebration from 3–10 PM, with live music, drag, and mainstage performances headlined by Canadian pop artist Rêve. It’s definitely going to be one of the biggest free events of the week!

🆓 Stony Plain Outdoor Movie Night (August 22) 🎬 Mayfield Common hosts its first free double feature, with GOAT at 3:30 PM followed by Jurassic World Rebirth at 6:35 PM. Pre-show fun starts at 2 PM with balloon art, airbrush tattoos, magic, and a Grindstone comedy set between movies, with no registration required.

🎟️ Pawn Shop Block Party with Steve Aoki & Adventure Club (August 21–22) 🎧 Pawn Shop Live turns its outdoor space into a two-day electronic music festival, with Steve Aoki headlining Friday and Adventure Club headlining Saturday. Expect big drops, additional DJs, vendors, food, and a full weekend-party atmosphere. Get your tickets here.

🎟️ CPKC Women’s Open (August 20–23) ⛳ The LPGA Tour’s Canadian national championship comes to Royal Mayfair Golf Club for one of Edmonton’s biggest sporting events of the year. Competition runs through Sunday, with daily grounds tickets and four-day passes available. Tickets available here.

🎟️ ZooBrew (August 21) 🍻 The Edmonton Valley Zoo opens after hours for an adults-only evening with 20+ local breweries and distilleries, food trucks, live music, and the chance to explore the zoo after regular hours. The 18+ event runs from 5–10 PM and makes for a fun late-summer night out. Get your tickets here.

🎟️ Guns N’ Roses + The Black Crowes (August 26) 🎸 Guns N’ Roses bring their 2026 World Tour to Commonwealth Stadium for the biggest concert of the week, with The Black Crowes opening the night. The show starts at 6:25 PM, and standard-admission tickets are currently listed from about $66.50. Grab your tickets here.

🎟️ Opera al Fresco (August 26) 🎶 The Edmonton Opera Chorus and featured soloists perform throughout the University of Alberta Botanic Garden for one of this week’s more unique date-night options! Tickets include the garden performance and a charcuterie snack box, making it a lovely late-summer evening out. Tickets available here.

If It’s Big, It’s At Commonwealth 🏟️

With Guns N’ Roses coming to Commonwealth Stadium this week, it’s a good excuse to look back at the kind of place Commonwealth has always been: not just a stadium, but Edmonton’s “everybody show up” venue.

It opened for the 1978 Commonwealth Games, a moment that put Edmonton on a much bigger international stage. Since then, the stadium has been home to Grey Cups, Elks history, World Cup soccer, international athletics, huge outdoor concerts, and the kind of one-night-only events that feel like the whole city is moving in the same direction.

Its scale surpasses most anything in the city. David Bowie brought around 60,000 people there in 1983. The 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup opener packed in more than 53,000 fans. Taylor Swift, U2, AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, Beyoncé, and Metallica have all turned it into a giant outdoor music venue.

GTFO Escape Entertainment is a downtown spot for people who like their plans with a little more pressure, mystery, and “wait, are we overthinking this?” energy. Groups are locked into themed rooms and have to work together to solve clues, crack codes, and escape before time runs out.

It’s a fun switch-up from the usual dinner-or-drinks plan, especially for friend groups, double dates, birthdays, team outings, or anyone who wants to see who stays calm under pressure. The rooms are designed to be immersive and puzzle-heavy, so expect a lot of pointing at random objects and suddenly feeling like every detail might be a clue.
