Temperatures plummeted in the most dramatic way this week, and, by all accounts, it looks like we’ll be riding this cold spell through next week, as well (so sad).
The good news? The men pulled off an unbelievable comeback and overtime win yesterday at the Milano Olympics, and the women face off against the Americans for GOLD today at 11:10AM!
By the way, if you didn’t know, you can watch the Olympics for free on CBC Gem!
Welcome to all the new people who signed up this week (there were a lot of you).
Enjoy!

This Week In YEG
A new regional “defence alliance” has launched in the Edmonton region, led by a coalition including U of A, NAIT, Edmonton Global, Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, and YEG—an effort aimed at coordinating bids and growing defence-related work locally.
A Phase 1 winter parking ban (major roads and bus routes) is in effect as of 7am yesterday (February 18), and remains on until the city declares it over.
The “Cupcake” mural building on 124 Street is about to come down. The artist-collaboration mural at 10507 124 Street NW was always temporary, and demolition is expected in the coming weeks as the site moves toward new multi-unit housing.
An Alberta legal-tech startup says it’s launching an AI-powered personal injury “law service” that handles intake and client communication through an AI system, with a human lawyer overseeing each file; the company says its contingency fee is a flat 28%, and the Law Society of Alberta requires conditions and auditability as part of allowing it to operate.
Hawrelak Park is on track to reopen on March 13th after its multi-year rehabilitation! It’s been a long road since construction first began in 2023, but we’re almost back to the point of public access at this 68-hectare river valley gem.

The mountains are close to the hearts of many Edmontonians. I thought you might love this photo-driven report on how glaciers are changing in the Canadian Rockies, and what it looks like up close. Photographs by Edmonton photographer Amber Bracken.

The banks of the North Saskatchewan would be naked without it…but what exactly is (and has been) going on with the Rossdale Power Plant? If you’ve ever wondered what the story is, this article is for you. A grounded look at the site’s history and what its next evolution might become.

Malina Cafe & Bar - 10350 124 St #3
A new 124th Street stop for coffee and pastries in the daytime (with a more evening-leaning menu coming into focus). Open 9-4 Tuesday to Sunday (closed Mondays). Try their breakfast bacon croissant…trust me.

Shop Chop - 10265 107 St NW #102
A bright little downtown stop for plants, pots, cards, and quaint goods—useful when you need a gift that isn’t overthought. Maybe pick up something small to add to your home? Visit them this weekend!Red Brick Common - 5411 51 St, Stony Plain
If you want something to do this weekend, just a short drive from the city, you should check out Red Brick Common. It’s part museum, part public art gallery in a restored school building—more idiosyncratic than a standard “regional museum” stop.
