Good Morning, Edmonton! โ˜€๏ธ

Kicking off this weekโ€™s newsletter with a special announcementโ€”weโ€™re launching a referral program to reward you for spreading the word about River City Lights!

Hereโ€™s whatโ€™s up for grabsโ€ฆ๐Ÿ‘‡

Every newsletter going forward will contain your unique share link at the bottom of each email. No sign up required!

All you have to do is forward River City Lights or share your link with the people you know and care about. If they subscribe, it counts toward the tiers outlined above!

This is the main way we grow, which is something we couldnโ€™t do without you. ๐Ÿ™

Personally, I love the tote bagโ€ฆbut who will be the first to get a hoodie?!

Thereโ€™s now a page on our website with more information.

Moving on to this weekโ€™s newsletter! Thanks so much, everyone.

โ€”Eric

P.S. If you or someone you know is a local printer who wants to partner for the referral rewards (totes, toques, hoodies) reply to this email!

  • Baby Born at Oilers Game ๐Ÿ‘ถ A fan went into labour inside Rogers Place during the Oilers game against Vegas this past Saturday. The moment was even announced live during the broadcast, making it a night that, despite the loss (boo), no one in attendance is forgetting anytime soon! Itโ€™s unclear whether the baby was actually born during the game or later at hospitalโ€ฆbut whatever the case, congratulations to the family!

  • Spring street sweeping program is kicking off April 20th with crews starting to clear winter sand and debris from neighbourhood roads. Watch for posted signs and temporary parking bans (typically 7amโ€“7pm on weekdays), as vehicles left on the street could be ticketed or towed, and your block may not get fully cleaned!

  • New ICE District Event Park moves forward ๐Ÿ—๏ธ The City of Edmonton and Oilers Entertainment Group have selected DIALOG and HNTB to design a new indoor-outdoor event park next to Rogers Place, replacing the current Fan Park space. The project is being positioned as a major downtown upgrade: a flexible venue for concerts, festivals, and community events aimed at bringing more year-round activity into the core. Design is now underway, with construction expected to begin in 2027.

  • Alcohol & Cannabis Banned at Banff Campgrounds on Long Weekends ๐Ÿ•๏ธ If youโ€™re planning a summer camping trip to Banff, Parks Canada has announced a full ban on alcohol and cannabis during three major long weekends (Victoria Day, Heritage Day, and Labour Day). The restrictions apply across many of the parkโ€™s main campgrounds and run from Friday morning to Monday late morning, with violations potentially leading to fines or even eviction.

Worth Your Time

  • ๐ŸŒณ The Secret Longtree Society

Edmonton has a documentary showing this week about something wonderfully niche and oddly moving: a local group trying to plant trees that could outlive all of us by centuries.

The Secret Longtree Society screens Saturday at NorthwestFilmFest, and the premise alone โ€” equal parts environmental optimism, civic weirdness, and long-term thinking โ€” feels like exactly the kind of story this city does best.

Local Finds

  • The Moth Cafe ๐Ÿ“ 9449 Jasper Avenue

The Moth Cafe is a plant-filled sanctuary that proves plant-based dining can be both hearty and imaginative. Bathed in natural light and draped in greenery, the space offers a calm escape from the downtown bustle.

Whether youโ€™re there for a creamy Cardamom Rose latte or their signature Purple Yam Risotto, the menu focuses on fresh, whole-food ingredients that appeal to vegans and omnivores alike.

Itโ€™s a perfect spot for a weekend brunch or a quiet afternoon of work (one of my go-toโ€™s), especially if youโ€™re looking for thoughtful, community-focused vibes and a great selection of medicinal teas.
